So, your little one is getting bigger and you’re thinking about starting solid foods…
This is a big step for both of you!
Often, this new experience of starting your baby on solids can feel exciting but also intimidating for parents, so if you feel this way, you’re not alone.
Of course, before you start your baby on solid foods, it’s important to make sure that they are ready. So, how can you tell?
Here are some signs that your baby is ready to start eating solids…
4 signs that your baby may be ready to start solid foods
1. Your baby can sit up independently (or with a little support)
Can your baby sit up for a period of time while playing with little to no support? Babies will need to have enough core muscle built up to sit while eating. Many infant chairs are available to assist your baby with sitting up, but you still want to make sure that they can do this mostly on their own.
2. Your baby can pick up small objects
Can your baby grab blocks or other small toys by using a fist or pincer grasp? These motor skills are needed to grab food and bring it to their mouth. Don’t worry if your baby isn’t an expert at this yet. Grabbing solid foods is a huge motivation for babies to learn this new skill!
3. Your baby has started showing interest in food
Is your baby watching you eat, or perhaps making ooh and ahh sounds? Has your baby tried to grab food away from you? Do they open their mouths when you approach with a spoon? If so, they are showing interest in food.
4. Your baby has good head and neck control
Your baby should be able to hold their own head up, unlike a newborn who needs constant head support.
Typically, a baby is ready to begin solids when they are around 6 months of age.
